Dr. Vincent Harding Joins Drug Policy Reform Advocates in Denver

June 21 - Dr.Vincent Harding joined a group of speakers in Denver this past Friday at a rally hosted by the Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition and Drug Policy Alliance to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the drug policy reform movement. 

June 17 marked 40 years since President Richard Nixon, citing drug abuse as “public enemy No. 1,” officially declared a “war on drugs.” Activists say, however, that the war on drugs shows no signs of ending — or of succeeding.

According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, the federal government spent more than $15 billion in 2010 on the war on drugs. Individual states spent an estimated additional $25 billion and with the U.S. prison population growing on an average of 43,266 inmates per year since Dec. 31, 1995, with about 25 percent of new inmates sentenced for drug law violations advocates are “seizing upon this anniversary to prompt both reflection and action.”
